The Murray Arms Hotel

Pub cafe High Street, Gatehouse of Fleet

The Murray Arms Hotel occupies a special place in Scottish literary history as well as in the hearts of dog owners across Dumfries and Galloway. It was here, in 1793, that Robert Burns is said to have written ‘Scots Wha Hae’ – one of Scotland’s most stirring national songs – while staying at the inn on his tour of Galloway. Today the hotel continues to welcome travellers with the same warmth, and dogs are very much part of that welcome.

A Burns Connection

The inn dates back to the 18th century and has retained much of its coaching inn character. The Burns connection is a genuine piece of local history – a letter in Burns’s own hand references his stay here, and the hotel rightly celebrates this link. It adds a layer of atmosphere to what is already a handsome building on Gatehouse’s broad High Street.

The Bar and Food

The bar at the Murray Arms is comfortable and inviting, with good ales, a decent wine list, and a food menu that makes the most of Galloway’s outstanding local produce – beef, lamb, seafood from the Solway coast, and dairy from nearby farms. Portions are generous and the cooking is reliable. Dogs are welcome throughout the bar area, with water bowls and treats available.

Staying with Your Dog

The Murray Arms also offers accommodation, and dogs are welcome in bedrooms – making it an excellent base for a longer dog-friendly break in Galloway. The town of Gatehouse of Fleet itself is a delight: well-preserved Georgian architecture, independent shops, and easy access to beaches, castles, and forest walks in every direction.

Nearby Attractions

From the Murray Arms you can walk to Cardoness Castle in under ten minutes by car, reach Sandgreen Beach in five minutes, and be at the foot of the Galloway Hills within half an hour. For dog owners, it is hard to find a better-positioned base in southwest Scotland.
