Sweetheart Abbey
Sweetheart Abbey is perhaps the most romantically named historic site in all of Scotland — and it lives up to the title. Founded in 1273 by Devorgilla of Galloway in memory of her beloved husband John Balliol, she is said to have carried his embalmed heart with her until her own death, when both were buried together here.
The abbey ruins are remarkably well preserved, with much of the red sandstone walls and great central tower still standing. Set in the pretty village of New Abbey, just south of Dumfries, it makes an easy and rewarding half-day trip. Dogs on leads are warmly welcomed in the grounds, and the grassed areas around the ruins are ideal for a leisurely stroll.
Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, entry fees are modest and HES members visit free. The village of New Abbey itself is worth exploring — the 18th-century corn mill is also managed by HES and sits just across the road. Combine with a walk up Criffel for a full day out.
