Southerness Lighthouse and Coastal Walk

Walk Southerness Point, Southerness, Dumfriesshire, DG2 8AZ

Southerness is home to the oldest lighthouse on the Solway Firth — a striking white tower built in 1748 — and the coastal walk out to the point is one of the most rewarding easy walks on the Dumfriesshire coast. Starting from the free car park in the village, the circular route follows the shoreline south-west across open coastal grassland and sandy beach to Southerness Point, before looping back along a quiet lane.

This is a brilliant walk for dogs. The wide-open grassland and sandy beach mean plenty of room to run off-lead, and there are no livestock on the main route. The Solway shore is tidal, so keep an eye on the tide if you venture far onto the sand — the estuary is known for fast-moving tides. Fresh water is available from the burn near the car park.

The lighthouse itself is a private residence but makes a fine backdrop for photos. On clear days you can see across to the Lake District fells. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a relaxed walk. The car park has public toilets and the village has a small holiday park with a shop in season.
