Sandgreen Beach

Beach Sandgreen, Gatehouse of Fleet

Sandgreen is the kind of beach that dog owners dream about: wide, sandy, quiet, and completely free of the seasonal dog bans that restrict access on so many Solway beaches through the summer months. Dogs are welcome here year-round, making it a reliable choice whatever time of year you are visiting Galloway.

The Beach

The beach at Sandgreen sits on the eastern shore of Fleet Bay, a sheltered inlet of the Solway Firth. The sand is firm and clean, the water shallow and calm by Solway standards – perfect for dogs who enjoy paddling without being dragged off their feet by strong currents. At low tide the beach extends considerably, giving dogs plenty of room to run. The setting is lovely: views across Fleet Bay to the Galloway hills, with the quiet estuary feeling a world away from busier coastal resorts.

No Seasonal Restrictions

This is worth emphasising. Many beaches on the Solway coast have seasonal restrictions on dogs during the summer bathing season (typically May to September). Sandgreen has no such restrictions, meaning you can bring your dog here in July as freely as you can in January. For dog owners visiting in summer, this makes it one of the most useful beaches in the region.

Parking and Access

Parking is available at the Sandgreen Caravan Park adjacent to the beach. Access is straightforward from the B796 off the A75 near Gatehouse of Fleet. There are no facilities on the beach itself beyond the caravan park, so bring water and any supplies you need.

Combining with Nearby Attractions

Sandgreen pairs brilliantly with a visit to Cardoness Castle (5 minutes by car on the A75) or lunch in Gatehouse of Fleet village (10 minutes). Cream o’ Galloway ice cream farm is also nearby for post-beach treats. It is an easy, enjoyable day out that requires minimal planning.
