Rockcliffe Coastal Walk

Walk Rockcliffe Village Car Park, Rockcliffe, Dalbeattie, DG5 4QF

The coastal path between Rockcliffe and Kippford is one of the Solway coast’s most beloved walks, threading through woodland, across rocky outcrops, and along the mudflat-edged shore of Rough Firth. The route is managed partly by the National Trust for Scotland and offers superb views across to Hestan Island and the surrounding RSPB-important wetlands.

Dogs are welcome throughout, but must be kept on lead on and around Rough Island (accessible via a tidal causeway at low tide) from May to July due to ground-nesting birds — outside these months dogs can enjoy the island freely. The woodland sections of the path are particularly good for sniffing, and there are numerous burns and rock pools along the way for a drink or a paddle.

The Anchor Hotel in Kippford is a firm favourite with dog walkers and serves food and drink with a welcoming attitude to four-legged guests. Parking is available at both ends of the route, making a one-way walk with a car shuttle easy. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the return walk.
