Robert the Bruce Centre

Attraction High Street, Lochmaben, DG11 1NG

Lochmaben is a charming small town in Annandale, east Dumfries and Galloway, with deep connections to Robert the Bruce — Scotland’s legendary warrior king is believed to have been born at nearby Turnberry or Lochmaben Castle in 1274. The Robert the Bruce Centre in the town celebrates this heritage and serves as a local visitor hub.

For dog owners, the real draw is the wider Lochmaben setting. The town sits among several lochs — Castle Loch, Kirk Loch and Mill Loch — and the lochside walking is excellent for dogs. The ruins of Lochmaben Castle, a former royal stronghold, sit on a promontory on the shores of Castle Loch and are freely accessible for a windswept historical wander with your dog on lead.

The centre itself is community-run and seasonal, so it is worth checking opening times ahead of your visit. Lochmaben is an easy stop when travelling through Annandale, and combining a visit to the centre with a lochside walk makes for a thoroughly enjoyable half-day out in this often-overlooked corner of D&G.
