Portpatrick Coastal Walk and Cliff Path

Walk Portpatrick Harbour, Portpatrick, Stranraer, DG9 8TP

Portpatrick is the jewel of the Rhins of Galloway and the cliff path north from the harbour is simply one of the finest short coastal walks in southwest Scotland. The route follows the Southern Upland Way — which starts (or ends) right here at the harbour — north along the cliff edge, with the Irish coast visible on clear days just 21 miles across the North Channel.

The path climbs steadily from the harbour past ruins of Dunskey Castle before reaching open cliff-top grassland with vertiginous sea views. Dogs can run freely on most of the cliff-top sections, though keep them back from the edges — the cliffs are serious in places. The circular return cuts inland across farmland, where leads are advisable near any stock.

Portpatrick village is one of the most dog-friendly places in D&G, with several pubs and cafes welcoming four-legged visitors. The Crown Hotel has a good beer garden and accepts dogs. The village car parks fill quickly on summer weekends, so aim for an early start. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the circular route.
