Murray's Monument Walk
Murray’s Monument is one of the most rewarding short walks in Galloway – a compact 2-mile round trip that punches well above its weight for views and atmosphere. The tall granite obelisk sits high on the hillside above the Talnotry car park on the A712 New Galloway road, and the climb to reach it is steep but straightforward on a well-worn path.
The Monument’s History
The obelisk was erected in memory of Dr John Murray (1778-1830), a remarkable man who grew up as a poor shepherd boy on this very hillside before winning a scholarship, becoming a distinguished physician and philologist, and eventually working as a professor in London. The monument is a touching tribute to local talent and a reminder of how far ambition and education can take you from a remote Galloway farm.
The Route
Park at the Talnotry car park on the A712 (roughly midway between Newton Stewart and New Galloway). The path climbs steeply from the car park through heather and rough grass, reaching the monument in around 30-40 minutes. At the top, the views across the Galloway Hills and down towards Newton Stewart are spectacular – on a clear day you can see for miles in every direction.
Dogs at Murray’s Monument
This is one of the better walks in Galloway for off-lead dog freedom. The open hillside above the tree line is largely unfenced and away from sheep on most visits, giving dogs space to roam and explore. Several small burns cross the route, providing fresh water at regular intervals – useful on a warm day. Always check for livestock before letting dogs off.
Connecting Onwards
The car park at Talnotry is also the starting point for the Raiders Road Forest Drive, a scenic 10-mile route through Galloway Forest that is brilliant for a longer dog-friendly day out. Combine both for a full day in the hills.
