Mossyard Beach
Mossyard is the kind of small, hidden beach that feels like a local secret. Tucked between Gatehouse of Fleet and Creetown on the north shore of Wigtown Bay, it is a quiet sandy cove that attracts far fewer visitors than nearby Sandgreen — making it an excellent choice for dog owners who prefer a peaceful outing to a busier beach.
The Beach
The beach at Mossyard is a sheltered sandy cove backed by rough grassland and scrubby coastal vegetation. The sand is clean and the water is calm in the sheltered bay. It is a small beach — not the place to come if you need a mile-long run — but for a paddle, a dig, and a relaxed hour in beautiful surroundings, it delivers perfectly. Low tide reveals more sand and some rocky areas to explore.
No Seasonal Restrictions
Like Sandgreen just along the coast, Mossyard has no seasonal dog bans. Dogs are welcome here in June and July just as freely as in December. This makes it a particularly useful beach for summer visitors who find restrictions at more popular Solway beaches frustrating.
The Wider Area
Mossyard sits between two of Galloway’s best-loved coastal areas. To the east lies Fleet Bay and the beaches around Gatehouse; to the west, Wigtown Bay opens up with views to the Machars peninsula. The coastal road along this stretch is beautiful to drive, with numerous places to stop and take in the scenery. Cream o’ Galloway ice cream farm is a short drive away for post-beach treats.
Getting There
Turn off the A75 at the Mossyard sign between Gatehouse of Fleet and Creetown. The road leads down through farmland to a small parking area above the beach. The track to the beach is short and easy underfoot. No facilities on site — bring water for your dog.
