Kirroughtree Forest Trails, Galloway Forest Park
Kirroughtree is one of the best family and dog walking destinations in Galloway Forest Park, located just 3 miles east of Newton Stewart on the A712 Queen’s Way. The visitor centre is the hub for a network of waymarked walking and mountain biking trails through ancient oak woodland and managed forest, ranging from a gentle 1.5-mile purple loop to challenging 12-mile blue mountain bike circuits.
Dogs are welcome on all the walking trails and on the mountain bike tracks outwith peak biking times — keep them close on the biking trails to avoid collisions with cyclists. The forest is excellent for wildlife: red squirrels are regularly seen near the visitor centre, red kites circle overhead, and the burns running through the woodland are perfect for a splash and a drink.
The dog-friendly purple and green walking trails are ideal for all fitness levels and well-surfaced enough for muddy paws without too much mess. Newton Stewart, a short drive away, has a good range of cafes, pubs, and a pet-friendly high street. Combine Kirroughtree with a visit to the nearby Galloway Red Kite Feeding Station at Bellymack Hill Farm for a full Galloway wildlife day.
