Gateside of Auchengall
For dog owners who want to get truly away from it all, Gateside of Auchengall offers an exceptional base deep in the Galloway Forest Park near the iconic Loch Trool. This remote self-catering cottage sits at the edge of the forest with an immediate sense of wilderness that is hard to replicate anywhere else in southern Scotland.
The Location
Glentrool is one of the jewels of Galloway Forest Park – a stunning wooded glen running up to Loch Trool, where a famous battle memorial commemorates Robert the Bruce’s first victory in 1307. The surrounding forest offers waymarked trails ranging from gentle loch-side ambles to the demanding ascent of the Merrick, the highest peak in southern Scotland.
Dog Policy
Dogs of all sizes are very welcome here at no extra charge, which is refreshingly generous. The cottage has a private enclosed garden for off-lead time, and dog towels and bowls are provided. Dogs should be kept on leads on forestry tracks where livestock grazing may be in progress.
Walking from the Door
The forest tracks and hill paths begin immediately from the cottage, making this a perfect choice for owners who want to walk directly from the door without loading dogs in and out of the car every morning. The Loch Trool circuit, the Raiders Road Forest Drive, and the Southern Upland Way are all within easy reach.
