Galloway Sailing Centre
Finding genuinely dog-friendly self-catering accommodation in rural Dumfries and Galloway can be harder than it should be – which makes the Galloway Sailing Centre’s lodges on Loch Ken something of a gem. Up to two dogs are welcome per lodge at absolutely no extra charge, which remains frustratingly rare in the Scottish self-catering market.
The Location
Loch Ken is one of the finest lochs in southern Scotland – a long, winding freshwater loch running through the Glenkens valley north of Castle Douglas. It is known for excellent birdwatching, watersports, and the spectacular Red Kite population that has been re-established in the area. The Galloway Sailing Centre sits directly on the loch shore at Parton, with the lodges enjoying direct water access and loch views.
The Lodges
The self-catering lodges are well-equipped and comfortable, designed for families and activity-focused breaks. Each lodge has its own outside space, and the direct loch access means dogs can take to the water minutes after arrival. Dogs must not be left unattended in the lodges, which is standard and entirely reasonable.
What to Do
The loch itself is the main draw – swimming, kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding are all available through the centre. The surrounding Ken-Dee Marshes RSPB reserve offers excellent dog-friendly walking along the loch margins and through wetland habitat. Red Kite feeding at Bellymack Hill Farm, just a few minutes by car, is a truly spectacular experience – dozens of kites swooping low overhead at feeding time.
Castle Douglas and Beyond
Castle Douglas, Galloway’s ‘Food Town’, is just a short drive away and offers excellent independent shops, butchers, delis, and cafes for stocking up the lodge kitchen. The town is dog-friendly and easy to navigate on foot with a dog. From Loch Ken, the whole of Dumfries and Galloway is within easy reach for day trips.
