Galloway Forest Park
Galloway Forest Park is the UK’s largest forest park, stretching across 300 square miles of dramatic Galloway landscape. For dog owners, it’s simply unmissable — hundreds of miles of forest trails, lochside paths, and hill tracks offer endless adventure whatever the season.
The park is home to several visitor centres including Kirroughtree (near Newton Stewart), Clatteringshaws (on the Queen’s Way scenic route), and Glentrool. Each offers car parking, information, and trail maps. Dogs are welcome on all forest trails and are free to run off-lead where there is no livestock.
Highlights for dogs and owners include the Loch Trool trail (stunning loch views), the Raiders Road forest drive, and the Bruce’s Stone viewpoint at Glentrool. The park is also home to the Galloway Dark Sky Park, so evening strolls under a star-filled sky are a real treat.
Bring plenty of water and be aware of midges in summer. Car parking fees apply at main visitor sites. Forestry and Land Scotland manages the park, and their website has up-to-date trail information and seasonal closures.
