Cum Ye Inn
The Cum Ye Inn sits on Dalbeattie’s High Street in the heart of the town, which puts it within easy reach of one of the best mountain biking and walking forests in the south of Scotland. For visitors arriving with dogs after a day on the Dalbeattie Forest trails, or for locals looking for a straightforward pub that actually welcomes their dog, this is a dependable choice.
The Pub
This is a genuine community bar — unfussy, unpretentious, and run for the people who live in and around Dalbeattie rather than for passing trade. The welcome is warm and the approach to dogs is practical and relaxed: they come in, they settle, and nobody makes a fuss. A large beer garden to the rear gives dogs more room to spread out when the weather permits, and the garden makes it a useful stop in summer after a long walk or a coastal drive along the Solway.
The bar serves a range of beers, wines and spirits with the no-nonsense approach you’d expect from a good town-centre local. It’s the kind of place that regulars return to not for the decor but for the company and the straightforward welcome.
Dalbeattie and Its Walks
Dalbeattie is underrated as a dog-walking base. The town is edged by Dalbeattie Forest, a large Forestry Commission woodland laced with waymarked trails from gentle strolls to full mountain bike circuits. Dogs are welcome on the forest paths, and there are several car parks giving access to the network — ask locally for the current favourite routes.
The Solway coast is a short drive south, with access to the Rockcliffe and Kippford area, the Colvend coastline, and Rough Island — a tidal bird reserve managed by the National Trust for Scotland where dogs are restricted during nesting season (April–July) but welcome outside that window.
Dalbeattie Forest — forest trails start within walking distance of the town centre. Good all-weather walking on well-maintained paths. Dogs off lead on most of the woodland paths.
Sandyhills Beach — around 7 miles southwest, a wide sandy beach on the Solway with good dog access outside the summer peak.
