The Crown Hotel
There are few better places to end a coastal walk in Dumfries and Galloway than the Crown Hotel in Portpatrick. Sitting right on the harbourfront, it looks directly over the small fishing harbour and out to the Irish Sea beyond — a view that earns its keep whether you arrive in blazing sunshine or after a wet morning on the clifftops.
The Bar
The Crown’s bar is a proper pub — the kind that welcomes muddy boots and wet dogs with equanimity. It is the natural end point for walkers arriving on the Southern Upland Way (which terminates in the village), and the bar staff understand what a good walk followed by a good drink requires. Dogs are welcome, water bowls are available, and the atmosphere is unpretentious and genuinely relaxed.
Food and Drink
The menu covers the expected pub classics with local twists — Galloway lamb, seafood from the local boats, good chips. The bar has a solid selection of beers and a decent whisky range. On a fine day the harbourfront terrace is one of the most pleasant spots for a meal in the south-west of Scotland.
Portpatrick
The village is one of the most appealing on the Galloway coast: a natural harbour that sheltered packet boats to Ireland for centuries, now a popular stop for walkers, sailors, and day-trippers. The beach sits in the bay just below the village and is easily reached on foot. The clifftop path north of the village towards Dunskey Castle is one of the most dramatic short coastal walks in D&G — dogs on leads on the cliff sections, but with magnificent scenery.
Getting There
Portpatrick is at the end of the A77, about six miles south of Stranraer. Parking is available in the village car park above the harbour. The Crown is at the bottom of the main street, directly on the waterfront.
