Cream o' Galloway
Cream o’ Galloway is one of Dumfries and Galloway’s best-loved visitor attractions – an organic dairy farm that has been producing award-winning ice cream since the 1990s and now draws visitors from across Scotland and beyond. The good news for dog owners is that much of what makes it worth visiting is fully dog-friendly.
The Story
Cream o’ Galloway started as a working dairy farm at Rainton, near Gatehouse of Fleet, and the ice cream grew from a desire to add value to the farm’s own organic milk. Today it produces dozens of flavours using milk from the farm’s own herd, and the ice cream has won a string of awards. The farm shop also sells a range of dairy products, preserves, and local produce.
What Dogs Can Access
Dogs are welcome throughout the outdoor areas – the farm nature trail, the outdoor seating areas, and the surrounding farmland paths. The nature trail is a particular highlight: a circular walk through the farm that introduces visitors to the cows, the landscape, and the wildlife. Dogs find the whole experience rather stimulating. Water bowls are provided at the entrance. Dogs are not permitted inside the cafe building itself, but the outdoor covered seating area is available whatever the weather.
What to Order
The ice cream is the main event – try the salted caramel, the Galloway Gold, or one of the seasonal specials. The cafe also serves light lunches, soups, and cakes. There is a well-stocked farm shop for taking something home.
Practicalities
Cream o’ Galloway is open seasonally, typically April through October, with reduced hours in shoulder months. Check the website before visiting. Ample parking is available on site. It combines beautifully with a walk on Sandgreen Beach or a visit to Gatehouse of Fleet village, both just a few minutes away.
