Balcary Bay Beach

Beach Balcary Bay, Auchencairn

Balcary Bay is one of those places that rewards the effort of finding it. At the end of a single-track road south of Auchencairn, this sheltered bay offers one of the quietest beaches on the Solway coast — a shingle and sand shore backed by woodland and flanked by the dramatic headland of Balcary Point. For dogs and their owners who want a beach to themselves, it is often exactly that.

The Beach

The bay faces east across the Solway, sheltered to the south and west by Hestan Island and the Balcary headland. The beach is a mix of shingle and coarse sand, with rock pools at the northern end that are excellent for exploring at low tide. The water is clear and the bay is generally calm. It is not the place for long beach runs — the beach itself is modest in size — but combined with the coastal path it makes for a very satisfying outing.

Hestan Island

From the beach you can look across to Hestan Island, a small uninhabited island about a kilometre offshore. At very low tides it is occasionally possible to walk out to the island on foot, though this requires careful timing with the tides and is not for the faint-hearted. From the shore it provides a dramatic focal point, particularly at sunset.

The Balcary Point Walk

The coastal path from Balcary Bay out to Balcary Point and beyond is genuinely spectacular — one of the finest short coastal walks in Dumfries and Galloway. The cliffs are dramatic, the views extraordinary, and the path is easy enough for most dogs. Allow around two hours for the full out-and-back to the Point. The path continues to Rascarrel Bay for those who want a longer walk.

Getting There

Take the single-track road south from Auchencairn village, signed for Balcary. Follow it to its end at Balcary House Hotel, where there is roadside parking. The beach is a short walk from the hotel through the hotel grounds — follow the signed path.
