The Anchor Hotel
Kippford is one of those Galloway villages that stops people in their tracks. A tiny cluster of whitewashed cottages and colourful boats on the shore of the Urr Estuary, it is one of the most scenic spots on the Solway coast — and the Anchor Hotel sits right at the water’s edge, looking out across the estuary to the wooded hills beyond. For dog owners, it is one of the most rewarding pub stops in the region.
The Bar
The Anchor’s bar is the heart of the place: unpretentious, comfortable, and entirely welcoming to dogs. On a warm day the views from the windows are outstanding — yachts on the mooring, oystercatchers picking along the shoreline, the Rough Firth glittering in the afternoon sun. On a wet Galloway day, a warm corner and a good pint is equally satisfying. Water bowls are provided and the bar staff are genuinely dog-friendly in the best sense.
Food
The kitchen makes good use of local produce — Solway seafood, Galloway beef, and seasonal vegetables feature heavily on a menu that covers everything from simple bar snacks to proper sit-down meals. The fish and chips are well regarded. Booking is advisable in summer.
The Village and Walks
Kippford and its neighbour Rockcliffe are connected by the Jubilee Path, a lovely coastal walk through woodland and across the neck of the Rough Island peninsula. Dogs can be off-lead for much of this walk, and the route ends (or begins) right at the Anchor’s door. Rough Island itself is a National Trust bird sanctuary — dogs must be on leads there during nesting season, but the path around it is accessible year-round.
Staying Over
The Anchor offers accommodation, and dogs are welcome in the bedrooms — making it an excellent base for exploring the eastern Galloway coast. Kirkcudbright, Dalbeattie, and the Solway shore are all within easy reach.
