Dog-Friendly Beaches on the Solway Coast -- Where to Go and When

The Solway coast of Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s most underrated stretches of coastline – wide tidal flats, sandy bays, and dramatic views across to the Cumbrian fells. For dog owners, though, it pays to do your homework. Some beaches have seasonal restrictions on dogs during the summer bathing season (typically May to September), which can catch visitors out.

Here is our guide to the best dog-friendly beaches on the D&G Solway coast, including which ones have no restrictions at all.

Sandgreen Beach – No Restrictions, Year-Round

Sandgreen is our top recommendation for reliable, year-round dog access. Sitting on Fleet Bay near Gatehouse of Fleet, it is a wide, sandy, sheltered beach where dogs are welcome at all times with no seasonal bans. The shallow, calm waters are ideal for dogs who enjoy paddling, and at low tide there is plenty of room to run.

It is not the busiest or most famous beach in Galloway, which is precisely what makes it good. Parking is available at the adjacent Sandgreen Caravan Park. Combine with lunch in Gatehouse of Fleet or ice cream at Cream o’ Galloway farm nearby.

Mersehead Beach – Spectacular but Seasonal Restrictions Apply

Mersehead, on the RSPB Mersehead reserve near Dalbeattie, is one of the most dramatic beaches on the Solway coast. The views across to the Lake District are breathtaking, and in winter the reserve hosts huge flocks of barnacle geese arriving from Svalbard.

Dogs are welcome on leads between March and July during the bird nesting season. From August through February they are welcome off-lead on the beach – and this is genuinely the best time to visit. An autumn or winter morning at Mersehead, with thousands of geese in the air and the Cumbrian fells sharp on the horizon, is an unforgettable experience. Parking is free at the RSPB reserve car park.

Understanding Seasonal Beach Restrictions

Seasonal dog restrictions on Scottish beaches are set by local authorities to protect bathers and are generally in place from around 1 May to 30 September. They typically cover the main bathing beach area and are signposted at beach access points. Where restrictions apply, dogs are usually still permitted on parts of the beach outside the designated bathing area.

If you are visiting in summer and need a beach where your dog can run freely, Sandgreen is your best bet in this part of Galloway. For the eastern part of the region, check the Dumfries and Galloway Council website for current seasonal restriction information before you travel.

Tips for Beach Days with Dogs on the Solway

  • Tides: The Solway has one of the largest tidal ranges in the UK. Check tide times before heading out – beaches that are wide at low tide can narrow dramatically, and the Solway tide comes in fast.
  • Fresh water: Bring plenty for your dog. Salt water is not good for dogs to drink in quantity.
  • Mud: Solway beaches can have significant mudflat areas at low tide. Some dogs absolutely love this; be prepared for a muddy dog and a muddy car.
  • Birdlife: Please respect seasonal restrictions where they exist. Ground-nesting birds are vulnerable to disturbance from even well-intentioned dogs.

The Solway coast is a wonderful place to bring a dog. With a little planning to know where restrictions do and do not apply, you can find brilliant, quiet beach days here at any time of year.
