The Best Dog-Friendly Beaches on the Solway Coast

The Solway coast is one of the great undiscovered stretches of British coastline. Running along the northern shore of the Solway Firth from Dumfries in the east to the Rhinns of Galloway in the west, it is wild, tidal, and largely empty – and it offers views across to the mountains of the Lake District on a clear day that will stop you in your tracks.

Unlike many of the more famous Scottish coastal destinations, the Solway is not on the tourist trail in any serious way. There are no ice cream queues, no parking nightmares, no beach huts. Just wide skies, strong tides, wading birds, and miles of sand and mudflat. For dogs, it is extraordinary. Here are the beaches we rate most highly.

Sandgreen Beach

Sandgreen is a small, sandy beach tucked into the eastern side of Fleet Bay, a short drive from Gatehouse of Fleet. It is quiet, accessible, and one of the most reliably dog-friendly beaches in the region – dogs are welcome year-round with no seasonal restrictions.

The beach itself is sandy and sheltered, with the kind of calm, shallow water that suits dogs who like to paddle rather than swim. The setting is beautiful – hills behind, bay ahead, and very few other people most of the time. A short walk along the shore in either direction gives you more space and a sense of the wider bay.

Sandgreen is an excellent combination with a visit to Cardoness Castle (just up the road) or a post-walk pint in Gatehouse of Fleet. For a sweet finish, Cream o’ Galloway farm is just a short drive away.

Mersehead Beach (RSPB Mersehead)

Mersehead is a wilder, more remote prospect – a long stretch of beach and saltmarsh managed by the RSPB as part of the Mersehead nature reserve, one of the most important wintering grounds for barnacle geese in the UK. In autumn and winter, the skies here can be filled with thousands of geese arriving from Svalbard, an extraordinary natural spectacle.

Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the reserve. The key seasonal restriction is spring: between approximately March and July, the reserve is important for nesting birds and dogs should be kept on leads and away from the saltmarsh edges. From August through February, dogs are welcome off-lead on the beach – and this is genuinely the best time to visit. An autumn or winter morning at Mersehead, with thousands of geese in the air and the Cumbrian fells sharp on the horizon, is one of the finest experiences Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. Parking is free at the RSPB reserve car park.

Rockcliffe and Rough Island

Rockcliffe is one of the prettiest villages on the Solway coast – a National Trust for Scotland village sitting above a small beach and estuary with views across to the Urr Water. The beach itself is small but lovely, and the village is genuinely dog-friendly with easy access to the shore.

Just offshore sits Rough Island, a small NTS-owned island accessible on foot at low tide. It is a wonderful short adventure for dogs – the crossing is only possible for a couple of hours either side of low tide, so check times carefully. Seasonal restriction: Rough Island is a bird sanctuary and dogs must be kept off the island entirely during nesting season (May and June).

The estuary walking around Rockcliffe and neighbouring Kippford is some of the best in Dumfries and Galloway, and the combination of village beach, island crossing, and estuary path makes for a genuinely memorable dog walk.

Kippford

Just north of Rockcliffe, Kippford is a small sailing village on the Urr estuary with a charm entirely its own. The village is strung along a narrow road above the water, with boats moored in the estuary and a beach that is more shingle and sand than the wide Solway strands.

Dogs are very welcome here, the village is extremely relaxed about it, and the combination of beach, estuary, and woodland paths behind the village makes for varied walking. The Anchor Hotel in the village is dog-friendly and a good place for a post-walk drink looking out over the water.

Powfoot Beach

Powfoot is one of Dumfries and Galloway’s quieter secrets – a long, flat, sandy beach near Annan in the eastern end of the region, popular with locals but barely known to visitors. Dogs are welcome year-round with no restrictions, and the wide, flat sands make it ideal for a long run.

The beach is accessible from a small car park in the village of Powfoot, and the walk along the shore can be extended for several miles in either direction. On a clear day the views to the Cumbrian hills are outstanding.

Seasonal Restrictions and Tips for a Great Beach Day

Seasonal restrictions: Unlike many English beaches, Dumfries and Galloway’s beaches have relatively few formal seasonal dog restrictions. The key exceptions are nature reserves like Mersehead (lead rules in spring) and Rough Island (no dogs May-June). Always check local signage on arrival.

Tidal safety on the Solway: This is important. The Solway Firth is famous for its fast-moving tides – one of the fastest in Europe. Tidal flats that look solid and walkable can be covered by water with remarkable speed. Never walk out onto tidal mudflats or sandflats without checking tide times first, and always be aware of your return route. Keep dogs close in tidal areas. This is not a reason to avoid the coast – just a reason to be informed and sensible.

Fresh water: Always bring plenty for your dog. Salt water is not good for dogs to drink in quantity.

Mud: Solway beaches can have significant mudflat areas at low tide. Some dogs absolutely love this; be prepared for a muddy dog and a muddy car.

Birdlife: Please respect seasonal restrictions where they exist. Ground-nesting birds are vulnerable to disturbance from even well-intentioned dogs.
